“Kaolin/ Glass”, 2023, Georgia Wild Clay, Glass, Wood, 25” x 10” x 4”
This piece focuses on a wild clay body with a particular importance to me and simple industrial design. Wild clay has been a part of my life since childhood when I would dig up clay, make pinch pots and throw them in bonfires to see what would happen. This specific clay body is important as it is from the backyard of my childhood home and the first clay body I began experimenting with in college. I chose to leave this clay body unglazed and uncovered. It exposes the iron pigment and sandy texture that are characteristics of this sentimental clay. The simple surface carvings further expose these material characteristics. It is divided in half with sheets of glass, allowing the viewer to look through and see the connecting form. The angle of the piece and the way it balances on its stand emphasize the form. The focus of this piece to rests on the characteristics of the clay body itself.
